Looking for the perfect family RV getaway?

Our quick adventure from Tampa Bay to Atlanta, Georgia, was packed with lots to do and unforgettable memories!
Here’s a quick look at our trip:

  • Lodging: Forsyth KOA – A convenient and cozy campground with easy interstate access.
  • Favorite Coffee Stop/Grocery: Ingles with Starbucks – A great spot to stock up and grab a morning coffee.
  • Zoo Atlanta: While the pandas may be gone, you can still marvel at elephants, giraffes, and fascinating reptiles.
  • Stone Mountain Park: Take on the challenge of the 1-mile hike or glide to the summit on the Skyride for epic city views.
  • High Falls State Park: Trek the Falls Trail for stunning waterfalls, then unwind with a picnic while the kids enjoy the playground.
Day One: Zoo Atlanta

We kicked off our adventure with a trip to Zoo Atlanta, taking advantage of the mild weather. While we were excited to see the pandas, visitors should note that the panda exhibit has officially ended, as the pandas returned to China in October 2024. However, there’s still plenty to see and do!

Some of our favorite exhibits included:

  • The Elephant and Giraffe Habitat – Watching these gentle giants up close was an unforgettable experience.
  • The African Savanna – Home to zebras, ostriches, and lions, this area offers a glimpse into the wild.
  • The Scaly Slimy Spectacular – If your family enjoys reptiles and amphibians, this exhibit is a must-see.

For those looking for interactive experiences, Zoo Atlanta offers a variety of educational programs, behind-the-scenes tours, and even a petting zoo for younger children. Be sure to check their website for seasonal events!

Day Two: Stone Mountain Park

Our second day took us to the iconic Stone Mountain Park, where we tackled the 1-mile walk-up trail to the summit. Despite the chilly air, the steep incline quickly warmed us up.

Some things to know about the hike:

  • The path is well-marked with yellow paint.
  • Handrails are available in steeper sections.
  • The panoramic view from the top is breathtaking—on clear days, you can see downtown Atlanta in the distance.

If hiking isn’t for you, don’t worry! The Summit Skyride offers a scenic cable car ride to the top, making the stunning views accessible to everyone. After our climb, we explored the park’s many trails and historic sites before settling down for a relaxing picnic. Be sure to check Stone Mountain Park’s website for seasonal events, as they frequently offer laser light shows and themed festivals.

Day Three: High Falls State Park

By day three, we were feeling adventurous despite the brisk 40-degree temperatures (which, as native Floridians, felt practically Arctic to us!). We packed a picnic and headed to High Falls State Park, a hidden gem with breathtaking scenery.

We started our visit with a hike along the Falls Trail, which offered stunning views of the cascading waterfalls as we navigated the rugged terrain. The cool air and rushing water created a peaceful yet invigorating experience. After completing the hike, we made our way back to the picnic area, where we enjoyed a well-earned lunch.

Highlights of High Falls State Park:

  • A series of scenic waterfalls cascading over rugged rocks
  • Hiking trails offering peaceful views of the river
  • Picnic areas with a playground, perfect for families
  • Opportunities for fishing, boating, and camping

This state park is a perfect spot for those looking to unwind in nature. The hiking trails vary in difficulty, so there’s something for everyone, whether you want a leisurely walk or a more challenging hike.
