March in the North Georgia Mountains is typically in the mid to high 60s during the day and low 40s at night, however in 2023 our Spring Break getaway to the Georgia mountains was a very chilly week. Check out our favorite places to visit.
Downtown Ellijay welcomed us with its quaint charm and delicious eateries. From antique stores to unique coffee shops and bakeries, there was something for everyone. We indulged in delicious sandwiches and the best piece of chocolate cake at the Cantaberry Restaurant and the boy’s enjoyed their favorite pizza at Ellijay Wood Fired Pizza.
Tumbling Waters Nature Trail
Despite the chill, we ventured into nature along the Tumbling Waters Nature Trail. The trail to the falls was friendly for all ages and a great way to start off the week’s adventures.
Amicalola Falls State Park
Amicalola Falls State Park is home to the third-highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Despite the cold, we couldn’t resist hiking the 604 steps up the front of the waterfall. This is a MUST see. If you are not into climbing steps, there is a parking lot at the base and at the top of the falls. Head over to the lodge for lunch or pack a picnic!
Fort Mountain State Park/Stone Tower & Overlook
What a beautiful and therapeutic ending to our stay in the mountains. Fort Mountain State Park did not disappoint. We began our family friendly hike through the mysterious stone wall, then made our way to the beautiful Historic Stone Fire Tower, and ended with the most spectacular view at the overlook.
EXPEDITION: BIGFOOT! The Sasquatch Museum
A MUST see on your way to Blue Ridge! After my visit I am a believer;) The museum’s exhibits and artifacts provided an entertaining glimpse into the mysterious world of Bigfoot, sparking lively discussions and laughter among us for the remainder of our trip.
Mercier Orchards
No visit to Ellijay is complete without a trip to Mercier Orchards. Orchard tours and wagon rides are not in operation in March but the store has SO MUCH to offer. The bakery and tasting room are both open! The kids had the best time sampling yummy treats and exploring all the store has to offer.
Reece’s Cidery & Tasting Room
At Reece’s Cidery & Tasting Room, we warmed up with a tasting of locally crafted ciders. With a family friendly atmosphere, we were able to enjoy a grown up moment while the kids play outdoor games on the patio.
